Simple and easy Chinese Braised Pork Belly Recipe is a popular dish in China. There are so many different versions and twists based on the original.
I believe the original is from Shang Hai. I honestly do not know if my version is authentic or original or not, but I just have to say this is so delicious and comforting!
We love it so much especially when the skin and fat become gelatinous and easily melt in your mouth!
This Chinese Braised Pork Belly Recipe is one of my favourite winter recipes, especially since there’s so much snow in Vancouver and I need Something very comforting and warm. Stew is always my go-to if the weather is terrible outside.

- Pork Belly – cut into 1-inch Cubes
- Garlic – sliced
- Rock Sugar
- Soy Sauce
- Dark Soy Sauce
- Cooking Wine
- Hot Water
- Cilantro – for garnish
- Hard Boiled Eggs – optional
How far in advance can I make this Chinese Braised Pork Belly Recipe?
I have tried to make it one night before and keep it in the fridge. just reheat it and you can serve it immediately with hot steamed rice! Easy-peasy. 🙂
This is also good in the fridge for up to 3 days, I always prefer having freshly made meals so I would cut the pork belly into cubes, and keep them in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.
Cooking the Chinese Braised Pork Belly Recipe only takes you 45 minutes, just about the time when the rice is steamed. So, enjoying a freshly cooked meal instead of making it ahead is my suggestion. 🙂
How to make this Simple and easy Chinese Braised Pork Belly Recipe?
Make a hard-boiled egg by boiling it in cold water. It takes about 10 minutes. Heat a frying pan, and sear each side of the pork belly cubes until golden brown, around 1-2 minutes on each side.
Drain the pork belly cubes to remove excess fat, and use a kitchen towel to absorb extra oil from the pan. Add sliced garlic to the pan, stir and fry it for a minute, put the pork back into the pan and pour in cooking wine, let it reduce for a minute
Add soy sauce, dark soy sauce and water, stir well. Add rock sugar then cover the pot and cook with high heat until the water reaches a full boil, turn to medium-low heat so the liquid reduces to a simmer.
Peel and add the eggs and stir occasionally until glazed. Cover with a lid to simmer for about 15 minites. Turn them occassionally.
If the pork has turned tender but the sauce isn’t fully reduced, remove the lid and bring the heat up to medium. Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes, until the sauce is reduced to a glaze consistency. Keep an eye on the pot during the process and stir occasionally to prevent burning on the bottom.
Garnish with chopped cilantro and enjoy!

Ingredients
- 2 lbs Pork Belly- cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 egg
- 6 gloves Garlic – sliced
- 18 g Rock sugar
- 2 cups Hot water
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cooking wine
- Some Cilantro optional
Instructions

- Pour in cooking wine, let it reduce for a minute.
